Impedence; Impedance (disambiguation)

Impedance
·add. ·noun The apparent resistance in an electric circuit to the flow of an alternating current, analogous to the actual electrical resistance to a direct current, being the ratio of electromotive force to the current. It is equal to R2 + X2, where R = ohmic resistance, X = reactance. For an inductive circuit, X = 2/fL, where f = frequency and L = self-inductance; for a circuit with capacity X = 1 / 2/fC, where C = capacity.
Impedance
The ratio of any impressed electro-motive force to the current which it produces in a conductor. For steady currents it is only the resistance. For variable currents it may include besides resistance inductance and permittance. It is the sum of all factors opposing a current, both ohmic and spurious resistances. It is often determined and expressed as ohms. Synonym--Apparent Resistance--Virtual Resistance.
impedance
<electronics, physics> Opposition to flow of alternating current. Impedance consists of resistance plus reactance (capacitive or inductive). Measured in Ohms. (2003-12-02)

Impedance

Impedance is the complex-valued generalization of resistance. It may refer to:

  • Acoustic impedance, a constant related to the propagation of sound waves in an acoustic medium
  • Electrical impedance, the ratio of the voltage phasor to the electric current phasor, a measure of the opposition to time-varying electric current in an electric circuit
    • High impedance, when only a small amount of current is allowed through
    • Characteristic impedance of a transmission line
    • Impedance (accelerator physics), a characterization of the self interaction of a charged particle beam
    • Nominal impedance, approximate designed impedance
    • Impedance matching, the adjustment of input impedance and output impedance
  • Mechanical impedance, a measure of opposition to motion of a structure subjected to a force
  • Wave impedance, a constant related to electromagnetic wave propagation in a medium
    • Impedance of free space, a universal constant and the simplest case of a wave impedance
Examples of use of impedance
1. "It‘s a good motivational tool for someone who has been dieting and exercising and is starting to lose motivation because nothing is changing on the scales." Body fat used to be measured using callipers, but today‘s devices are more sophisticated, and rely on a high–tech method called BIA (bio–electrical impedance analysis). Most are similar to normal scales – you stand on them in bare feet – others are hand–held.
